Visitors of different ages and interests find rewarding experiences at the Atwater Kent Museum of Philadelphia.

Summer Lessons

Where in the World is Philadelphia?

Find your way on a giant map of Philadelphia! Children learn map skills and discover their own neighborhoods through activities that take place on the largest map of Philadelphia ever created.Participants learn directions, map symbols, coordinates and find their school, home, and city landmarks, including Fairmount Park, the Schuylkill River and more.

Then, children draw and collage images of Philadelphia to make a picture of a favorite place in the city.

            Ages 5-8/75 minutes.   Maximum number:  33.   Fee:  $5 per child.



Archaeology: The City Beneath Us:

Philadelphia history lies just beneath our feet! Archaeologists learn about Philadelphia by examining historical documents as well as archaeological evidence. Children learn basic archaeology skills by analyzing images, maps, artifacts, and other primary sources. Then, children practice these skills in the AKMP garden in an archaeology scavenger hunt.

            Ages 8-13/90 minutes.   Maximum number:  33.   Fee:  $5 per child.



How Philly Works: Streets in Urban Life

Explore 300 years of activity on Philadelphia's streets. Students tour How Philly Works: Streets as Barometers of Urban Life. Exhibition artifacts include the 1701 Philadelphia City Charter signed by William Penn, the wampum belt given to Penn by the Lenape tribe, and documents and images about protests, parades, markets, and public health issues that occur on Philadelphia's streets. Inspired by 300 years of street activity, students design their own city plan.

            Ages 5-13/90 minutes.   Maximum number:  66.   Fee:  $5 per child.



Past Forward: Philadelphia History from Then to Now

In this fast-paced tour, visit five galleries at the AKMP. Find your home and school on a giant map of Philadelphia. Meet the characters in Norman Rockwell's Saturday Evening Post covers. Create a radio show inspired by historic Atwater Kent radios. Learn how to keep the peace in an exhibit about the history of violence and anti-violence activism in Philadelphia. See images of parades and protests in How Philly Works, an exhibit about activity on the streets of our city.

            Ages 5-13/75 minutes.   Maximum number:  150.   Fee:  $5 per child.



So, What's the Story about Violence in Philadelphia?

What causes violence and how can we work to create peace in our neighborhoods? Look at objects that represent four moments of violence in Philadelphia's history. Learn about some of the causes of violence, including frustration over inequality and drug and alcohol abuse. Explore the stories of those who worked for solutions to difficult conflicts in Philadelphia.

            Ages 8-13/90 minutes.   Maximum number:  33.   Fee:  $5 per child.

School Tours

Experience Philadelphia!
, the Museum's newly installed 1,600 square foot map of the city, engages students with hands-on interactive lessons about important periods and events throughout the city's history. All lessons incorporate local and state curriculum standards.

Homeschool

Join other homeschool students for an engaging lesson in Philadelphia history. Click on this link for program dates, times and registration information.

Adult Group Tours

At AKMP adult groups have the opportunity to craft visits that meet particular interests.

 

National History Day

National History Day
The Atwater Kent Museum of Philadelphia is one of the proud sponsors of National History Day in Philadelphia. Each year, middle and high school students have the opportunity to participate in a national competition that encourages students to be historians. Students learn how to define topics, conduct original research, develop presentations, and work together. For information concerning the topic and how AKMP can help develop projects, contact the Education Department at (215) 685-4832.
